THE WOMEN OF PASIÓN Y ARTE FLAMENCO COMPANY PRESENT THE FINAL PHASE OF “EL DUELO” (THE WAKE)
Pasion y Arte Flamenco Co. invites you to a viewing of the final phase of “El Duelo” (The Wake), at the 2010 Latin Roots and Rhythms Festival.
Witness the profundity of the modern Flamenco Language and be part of the experience! Performances will take place at the Upper Darby Performing Arts Center (601 N Landsowne Ave, Drexell Hill PA) on May 8th at 8pm.
Enter the inner world of women as they experience the phase of mourning surrounding the death of a shared loved one. Each dancer represents the many phases of mourning such as anger, sadness, rejection, nostalgia, and denial. Join Artistic Director Elba Hevia y Vaca as she explores the Flamenco as a healing art form. Through the traditions of flamenco and Afro-Cuban music, Hevia y Vaca hopes to create a piece which both pays tribute to her artistic ancestors, and expresses the modern, changing face of Flamenco.
Hevia y Vaca is thrilled to once again collaborate with some of the brilliant musicians who have worked with Pasion y Arte on past projects. The piece will feature the Afro-Cuban jazz singer Venissa Santi (recent Pew fellow), percussion artist Francois Zayas, flamenco guitarist Raphael Brunn, and flamenco cantaora Barbara Martinez. In addition, Paul Moffit, will be the work’s lighting designer. With “El Duelo,” Hevia y Vaca continues to explore the intersection of cultures and the marriage of styles.
Pasión y Arte is an all-female flamenco dance company created by Executive /Artistic Director and Choreographer Elba Hevia y Vaca in 2000. Hevia y Vaca is compelled to create challenging, provocative, innovative and original works of flamenco with the dual goals of preserving and strengthening the tradition and empowering women. Her work is deeply steeped in rigorous study of the Old World culture of flamenco baile (dance), cante (deep song), and toque (guitar), while incorporating New World flamenco and feminism. Through performance and residency activities Pasión y Arte fosters a uniquely feminine presence, practice, and content in a traditional form that has been dominated by male performers since the 15th century. Pasión y Arte’s work is a contemporary manifestation of the Flamenco tradition moving towards a new aesthetic—Neo-Flamenco.
